Customizing FeedGhost

Options dialog, Application tab

'Application' Tab

Availability

These options control what happens when you start, minimize, or close FeedGhost. When running with the curved custom window border, the last two options are unavailable, since that border has a special "send to tray" button.

Crash Reports

Hopefully you won't experience any program crashes, but if you do, you can choose whether to send them to us for analysis. Sending crash reports is entirely voluntary, and you can choose whether to include your username or not. If you don't, crash reports are completely anonymous.

Visuals

FeedGhost can be customized to look differently. You can choose various fixed color schemes (such as the shiny black color scheme), or version that matches your current Windows theme (blue, silver or olive green). You can also choose between a curved window border, or a standard one.

If you are running Windows Vista, the defaults are slightly different: FeedGhost makes use of the glass effects if available.

Once you're familiar with FeedGhost's toolbar buttons, you can choose to turn off the tooltips from the various toolbars, or make the toolbar buttons smaller. Switching to full-screen mode (F11) makes the buttons smaller by default.

Options dialog, Reading tab

'Reading' Tab

Open Browser Links

When you click web links in the article browser, you can either open them in tabs to the right of the subscriptions tree, or they can be opened in an external browser. (Note that shift-clicking links will always open them in an external browser).

Should you choose to open links in a tab, two further options are available. You can choose not to switch to the new tab, which is useful for "stacking up" web pages for later review. Additionally, you can choose to re-use browser tabs, if you don't like to keep closing tabs. (Holding down the alt key will perform the opposite switching action to your current settings).

News Items

When news items are clicked in the list, they will be marked as read by default. If this option is unchecked, there are other ways to mark news items as read: by using "Read More", by clicking the envelope icons in the article browser, by right-clicking the news list, or by right-clicking on the subscriptions tree.

Browser

Enter a web-address in the homepage box to cause FeedGhost to navigate to that page when the "Browse" button is clicked.

Options dialog, Integration tab

'Integration' Tab

Internet Explorer

If you use the Internet Explorer browser, you can choose to add entries to the right-click menu to locate feeds in that web-page, or tag the web-page. Click "Add" to add these entries, and "Remove" to take them away. Note that the changes won't take effect until you restart Internet Explorer.

Firefox

If you use the Firefox browser, there are two levels of integration. Clicking the "Extension" button allows you to install a Firefox add-on that sets FeedGhost as your default RSS handler, as well as adding right-click menu items and a status bar button for tagging web-pages. Alternatively, if you just want to change the default RSS handler, click "Add" to set FeedGhost as your handler, or "Remove" to unset it.

File Associations

If you're using an older browser that doesn't understand RSS feeds, you can associate FeedGhost with .RSS and .ATOM filetypes. FeedGhost will attempt to locate the subscription address from these files.

Options dialog, Connection tab

'Connection' Tab

Custom Proxy Settings

FeedGhost will try to use your connection settings from Internet Explorer to connect to the internet. If however you need to supply custom settings, you can enter them here. If all is working well, you should leave this unset.
