Installation and Setup

Windows Update

Windows Update

Depending on your software setup, FeedGhost may need to install some additional Windows components. Both of these are from Microsoft, and are also available from Windows Update. These may take several minutes to install, but only need to be installed once. Please note that the update is continuing even if the progress bar stops for a while!

Installation

Once your system is ready, the FeedGhost installer will start.

Installer Options

You can choose whether to integrate FeedGhost with various parts of your system.

Create a desktop shortcut
When ticked, a shortcut to FeedGhost is added to your desktop. FeedGhost is also accessible from the Start Menu if you choose not to create this.
Create a quick-launch shortcut
The quick-launch toolbar can be shown by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing Toolbars -> Quick Launch. It's a handy way of getting to applications you use often.
Add shortcuts to Internet Explorer right-click menu
If you use the Internet Explorer web-browser, you can choose to add an entry to the right-click menu for locating feeds and tagging websites.
Set FeedGhost as Firefox's default feed handler
If you use the Firefox web-browser, you can set FeedGhost as the handler for RSS feeds, so that when you click the orange RSS button in the address bar, FeedGhost will launch.

Setup Wizard

For a visual indication of what a choice will look like, hover your mouse over the magnifying glasses on the right.

To choose an option, click in the white box on the left.

When feedGhost starts for the first time, the setup wizard will appear. This lets you make a few choices about how FeedGhost looks and feels, however none of the options are permanent: you can always change these later.

Layout and Reading Style

Layout and Reading Style

FeedGhost supports two main usage patterns:

"River-of-News" Style
All unread articles are presented in a single "river". One keypress lets you move through all your articles, marking them read as you go.
"List" Style
Navigation through the articles is manual, using the articles list. Clicking articles displays them and marks them as read.

Starting Subscriptions

Starting Subscriptions

If you're new to RSS, or just want to try FeedGhost quickly, we've selected a few feeds on various subjects. Choose the first option and they'll be added once you complete the wizard.

Alternatively, if you already have subscriptions in OPML format, choose the second option and you'll be prompted to browse for an OPML file.

Color Scheme

Color Scheme

Finally, you can choose a color scheme for FeedGhost. Hover over the previews on the right for a mini-view of the scheme, or tick the boxes to try them out. Note that the "Windows Theme" follows your Windows desktop settings, so it might look different to our preview.
